The Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest (SAFN) is the nation’s first regional stakeholder effort to explore the opportunities and challenges surrounding the production of sustainable aviation fuels. This cooperative effort, facilitated by Climate Solutions, yielded the 2011 SAFN Report, which reflects the perspectives of more than forty stakeholders.  The report assesses current trends in aviation fuels and supply chains in the context of regional biomass technologies and feedstocks, and concludes with priority policy action steps to create a sustainable aviation fuel industry in the Northwest.

Key recommendations include:

1)    Create a strategic focus on sustainable fuels for aviation

2)   Promote stable, long-term policy to attract investment

3)   Ensure support for aviation fuels and promising feedstocks under the Renewable Fuel Standard 2 (RFS2) Program

4)   Provide strong state and local backing for this industry sector

5)   Target research and development on regional efforts critical to commercializing sustainable aviation fuel projects

6)   Incorporate sustainability considerations into efforts to create an advanced biofuel industry.

The SAFN website hosts additional biofuel resources and news releases.
